LENTEN REGULATIONS:  Wednesday, February 17, we begin our journey through Lent.  Each Lent we are asked to carefully examine our life and to look for ways to strengthen our faith life.   We are given two wonderful guidelines in the form of Abstinence and Fasting as well as a beautiful gift in the Sacrament of Reconciliation to help us.  These guidelines and the Sacrament continually call us back to a closer relationship with our Lord and brother Jesus.    Just to refresh our memories:

The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available every Wednesday evening during Lent (The Light is on for You), as well as every Saturday at 3:15pm throughout the year.

Abstinence: Catholics over 14 are bound to the obligation of abstinence.  Abstinence is to be observed on Ash Wednesday (Feb. 17) and all Fridays of Lent.  On days of abstinence, meat may not be used at all.

Fast: Catholics over 18 and up to the beginning of their 60th year are bound to the obligation of fasting.  Ash Wednesday (Feb. 17) and Good Friday (April 2) are days of fasting.  On these days, only one full meal is allowed.  Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each one’s needs, but together they should not equal another full meal.  Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed.

Regarding other weekdays of Lent, participation in daily Mass, voluntary observance of fasting, traditional Lenten Devotions of self-denial are also recommended.
